Dr. Saumen Mandal is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, since 2015.

Dr. Mandal obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, both in Ceramics Engineering from the University of Calcutta and IIT-BHU in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 2013. He has two post-doctoral research fellowships from Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Center for Nano Science and Technology Milan, Italy and Dongguk University, Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Mandal has one granted US Patent (US Patent 9680097 B2) and three Indian Patent (317139, 347677 & 436150) and remaining one filed Indian Patents.

Dr. Mandal has authored/co-authored 55 peer-reviewed journal papers and 53 conference presentations. He received “Gandhian Young Technological Award, 2014”- from Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions, India. He is recipient of Invention Award with an amount of 10,000 USD from Intellectual Venture, Asia.

Dr. Mandal is also awarded “Early Career Research Award” and "Core Research Grant" from the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB). He has achieved eight best paper/poster awards in the international/national conferences till now. He has received "Manohar Parrikar Prashasti Award'' for propelling the frontier of Global Power India 2021 from Rethink India.
